Star Fox: Assault

I was glad to hear and see that they were making another Starfox game with some flying in it. Since I was a huge fan of Starfox 64(which was all flying to the 3 people that didn't know that.) Than I played this game, and lets just say it made me sad.

The game is a mix of flying, driving around in a tank, and a new edition that should have never been (just like Ben Affleck with acting)Third person shooting. Now all this sounds fun at first right? Well I'm sorry to say but this game is not what I hoped for. At first you start off in an all flying level which I'll talk about later, than they make you run around like a rapid chipmunk on speed! A rabid chipmunk on speed with GUNS! When your on your feet your only mission is to destroy something. Seriously, that is every mission. Destroy these generators, destroy these robots, destroy these bombs, destroy the dreams of Nintendo fan boys (the last one is a secret level.) It's basically run and gun on these levels. You pick up weapons that for some reason you have to just pick up in the next level. The ground controls are very loose (almost as much as Paris Hilton, almost.) They are very sensitive and just all over the place. The whole running around part gets very repetitive very fast and is just something they shouldn't have had on this game.

Well I think I've talked enough about the running and gunning. I bet your wondering if the flying and tank action is any good. Well there are plenty of times when you are able to get into an R-wing and a tank. The tank just makes the ground levels easier with it's massive firepower, but it just isn't any fun to drive. It's slow and feels clunky. You are given the chance you hop into any of the two vehicles in some of the on foot levels. The problem here is that most of the levels they let you do this in are pretty small so there's not much to explore. They are pretty helpful in mowing down enemies, because there are enemies everywhere! To bad there isn't really any variety of robots. There small flying robots, about your size walking robots, maybe two types of big robots, and of course bosses. I can think of maybe only 10 different kinds of creatures you kill and thats just not enough and it just lowers the excitement of playing the game.

In the levels that you just fly in the R-wing are just mediocre. I remember in SF 64, as you flew around stuff was happening all over. Stuff was blowing up, enemies came out of all directions, and it was just exciting to play. The flying missions are a lot like that, just you need to take the exciting part out. They are just all boring as hell! You are forced to flew into swarms of enemies that don't really even shot at you. They just want you to crash into you, and they do get behind you and shoot you (which gets  really annoying!), but all you have to do is tilt the C-stick than you do a loop and than you shoot them. Your ship also seems to go very slow, mind numbingly slow! Even when you do boast it feels slow. Let me explain the sequence you do things in about all the flying levels, you fly to something you have to destroy, on your way you shoot at flying robots gnats, you destroy the thing you are supposed to, than you do the same exact thing at least 4 more times, than you do the best part of the game, the boss fight. I think in every Starfox game i have played, the boss fights are the best parts. This part is the only part that feels right in this game. You fight a boss at the end of every level. It's like being forced to watch a horrible boring movie, than you see the credits roll at the end, and the happiness you get from that is about the same when you start the boss fight. It gives you the light of the end of the dark tunnel of sadness the levels in this game are. I think you got my point that the boss fights are fun and the best part of this game, to bad they didn't put in a boss survival mode. What can I say about the sound quality of this game? Well the music in the game is excellent, there just isn't enough of it. The sounds effects are pretty good. There again just isn't enough of them. You just seem to hear the same sounds all the time. When your flying around it does sound like your going really fast, it just doesn't look like it, so the whole feeling is just gone from that. And last a definitely least is the voice acting. They should have just had real animals make noises to use as the voices, it would have been better than the things they called voices in this game.

Has any Starfox game had a really deep story. I don't think so. So I'm not going to say anything about this one, cause it's crap. The cutscenes explain the story and well I'm not really sure if there were cut scenes, because at the end of every level I just say pieces of Flippy's crap, but those might have been cut scenes, I'm not sure.

Well not all hope is gone. This game does have some decent Multiplayer. You can have 4 player Dog fights, chase each other down on the ground, and have tank fights. I only had the chance to do a dog fight with one other person, and it was pretty fun. I'm thinking that with 3 other people with you; the multiplayer can be pretty enjoyable.

So all we wanted (well I know I did) was another Starfox game to fly around in space to and other planets, but no, they just can't see that. They had to have the totally unnecessary third person part to the game. The game could have been great if they just focused on the flying and multiplayer, but with what they did give us I'm forced to to give this game 5 Flippy's out of 10.

Good: Fun Boss fights, fun multiplayer, and good music

Bad: The whole third person part, about no excitement in the game, not a big variety of enemies, horrible cut scenes and voice acting, and do I have to go on?

Rent or Buy?: This is definitely a rent unless you must own every Starfox title.
